‘COVID-Somnia’ and Pet Love Spark New Trends in Cannabis Industry
You Know THC and you’re familiar with CBD, but have you heard of CBN and cannabinoid layering?
Or did you know that when it comes to medical marijuana your pets are next in line on the marketing list for these products? They are.
The world of medicinal marijuana extracts is growing, and, in the post-pandemic era, as so many are seeking relief from stress, anxiety, and “COVID-somnia,” it’s becoming more sought after than ever, even by Fido.
Today, when people are looking for relief and cannot find it in many other places, we see the market for these products set to explode. Every day there are marijuana-based products springing to the forefront, now including those for your pets.
Consumers, desperate for wellness and holistic options, are drawn in by the natural wellness properties that cannabinoids offer, and the mainstream public is just beginning to explore. They’re looking for all-inclusive health measures to enhance their lives and help them live better: enter CBN and cannabinoid layering.
What is CBN?
CBN (cannabinol) reportedly has a sedating effect on most users. Like CBD (Cannabidiol), it is part of the cannabis plant but is said to have more potent sedative qualities, unlike CBD, which is said to create alertness rather than sleepiness.
Created as THC ages or is heated or exposed to light and air, users once attribute negative sentiment to CBN because it caused drowsiness. Now, however, being marketed as a non-intoxicating cannabinoid it’s gaining traction for its use as a natural sleep aid.
Because of these supposed sleep-inducing properties, CBN is the cannabinoid that’s getting the attention — and raking in the cash — in 2021.
Did your ears just perk up at the mention of sedative qualities? If so, you’re not alone. Several manufacturers are selling CBN-based gummies, tinctures, and soft gels as sleep aids, and they’re in high demand. There’s a good reason for it too, most of us haven’t slept in what feels like a year.
Sleep neurologists and pharmacists are reporting increased sleep disturbances showing that sleep is another victim of the COVID-19 crisis, with an increase of about 15-percent of the population reporting sleep issues.
According to Nielsen, American’s spent roughly $825 billion — that’s about 42% more — on melatonin supplements in 2020 than they did in 2019.
People are desperate for sleep, and they’ll try almost anything to get it. Analysts predict the cannabis extract market could grow to $5.3 billion by 2025, much of it dedicated to the health and wellness category, and sleep is a large part of that.
Pot for Pets
Legal cannabis sales reached nearly $20 billion last year and are expected to double over the next four years. It is growing so fast it’s roughly comparable to home health care, construction and technology. The market has already created over 240,000 American jobs, and analysts expect a growth rate of 250% through 2028.
Another industry that is growing faster than anyone can keep track of is pet care. I know of several people who’ve been giving their hyperactive pets CBN treats with promising results and calmer pets. This could save a lot of pups from the pound.
According to the Grand View Research evaluation experts, the global pet care market is expected to reach over $202 billion by 2025.
They attribute this growth almost entirely to products, including health, wellness, and nutrition. Sales of high-tech collars that check your pet’s heart rate, body temperature and GPS location, pet webcams, telemedicine, nutritionists, liter robots, fetching toys and even electric fences are selling like hotcakes.
High quality, premium pet food is another growing industry with over 5% growth. That food happens to hold cannabinoid extracts particularly well.
It’s no surprise that cannabis and pets would merge. That’s just smart business.
Creso Pharma is creating two more types of Anibidiol animal health products, which they’ve — previously marketed in the European and Latin American animal health markets.
Anibidiol 8 has a mix of hemp oil, vitamins, and other ingredients to support cats and dogs’ immune systems.
A new bill in Michigan allows veterinarians to discuss cannabis-based treatment options like CBD use with pet owners. But they are still prohibited from administering and prescribing cannabis supplements due to federal law and a lack of regulations — at least for now.
Other CBD brands, such as MediPets and Nature’s Script and Pet Relief, sell pet CBD oil and edibles, especially for animals and the people who love them.
These pet edibles and oils are said to help with a variety of ailments such as arthritis, anxiety and pain management.
But, just like with human supplements, none of these health claims have been backed by long-term, approved studies. CBD is currently FDA approved only to treat two rare types of epilepsy and seizures. CBN isn’t FDA approved to treat any conditions.
There are stark differences between CBN and CBD extracts, but they also share a lot of similarities. Most cannabinoids, except for THC, are very minimally intoxicating on their own, if at all, but they have a significant effect on what happens when they interact with others. This is the area being explored now.
For example, CBD tones down paranoia or anxiety, and CBN produces a sleepy feeling. Together, they create a sedative.
As scientists begin to study the effect and components of cannabis, they’re learning that specific properties may work better together like many other plant-based medicines. This is called “The Entourage Effect.”
Pure cannabis can hold THC, CBD, CBN, and more than 100 cannabinoids that all work together to create a particular effect. These substances can be separated, which is how CBD has been used in recent years without the traditional “high” associated with cannabis.
Many people have found products infused with or made of just the CBD extract to be valuable in helping treat anxiety, depression, muscle pain, nausea and other ailments.
Each of these compounds (isolates) has unique effects and medicinal benefits. Those benefits can be amplified or altered according to how they’re combined.
It turns out CBN creates the ultimate entourage effect for that easy feeling it brings to the party and in 2020 and it looks like in 2021 we can use more easy feelings.
Still, CBD and CBN are sold in a variety of forms, including:
· Creams and lotions
· Oils and tinctures
Cannabis was already the country’s fastest-growing industry, but 2020 has taken the space to a new high that will continue well into 2021 and beyond.
